Mission: Dreamdust
Starbase 369 did not yet have a functional JAG department, which meant the officer assigned to Hawk’s case had to travel in from outside the sector.
It therefore took a few days for Commander Alia Moretti to arrive at Starbase 369 and she wasted no time the moment she disembarked. She had read the preliminary report en route — not that there was much of one yet — and had spent most of the transport ride reviewing similar cases and sketching out early defense angles.
Her first stop on the station was the Epsilon Fleet command offices. After introducing herself and receiving authorization — and directions — she made her way to Admiral Hawk’s temporary quarters.
Two security officers flanked the door. They looked bored until Moretti approached, at which point they stiffened to attention.
“Commander Moretti,” she introduced herself crisply. The guards stepped aside without question.
Alia pressed the door chime and waited, hands clasped behind her back in patient, practiced stillness.
When the door opened, she offered a small, professional nod.
“Admiral Hawk,” she said. “Commander Alia Moretti, JAG Corps. Your defense advocate. We spoke earlier, briefly.”
As the officer entered, Indi was standing next to her table again. Doing nothing. She had spent the last few hours pacing her quarters, and she was exhausted. Did they speak earlier? Not that she could recall.
The quarters still carried the consequences of her outbursts. The content of the tray and the tray itself still lay there. A huge dent was visible in the door next to the replicator. She didn't care.
One look over at the officer before her eyes focused on the stars outside again. "Commander," she spoke, in a voice very unlike her own - for somebody who would know her anyway.
Alia looked around the room, quickly filing away the various silent indicators that her new client was struggling. Then she moved her gaze to the admiral. "Shall we sit, Admiral?" she suggested.
She waited until Hawk was seated before she herself sat down on a nearby sofa.
"I am here on behalf of the Judge Advocate General of Starfleet to represent you and your interests. We will have enough time before any charges are filed to discuss your case, but I wanted to introduce myself as soon as possible."
She paused for a moment, then added gently, "Right now... is there anything you need?"
"No," Indi replied while she was distracted by the feeling of the sofa. She'd followed the commander there, but had yet to use it herself. It felt strange. The fabric felt strange. The way your body was supported felt strange. The whole thing felt strange. It's like she'd never sat on a couch before. It fueled the anger in her again. But why anger? It just felt strange and uncomfortable.
After a few moments, she couldn't stand it anymore and got up again. "No, I don't need anything," she repeated, making her way over to the viewport again.
Alia waited for a few moments and let the silence stretch. Her clients weren't usually forthcoming and this one wasn't any different.
“Is there anything you need from your previous quarters?" she asked. "Personal items, clothing, something familiar? I can arrange it."
"No," Indi repeated. She didn't want or need company. She didn't want or need a defense advocate. She knew what she had done. She knew the penalty for it. She'd been in Security long enough. She wasn't about to hide from it.
"Okay, then." Moretti got to her feet. "If you do need anything, contact me. I'm always available, at any time."
The flatness in Hawk’s tone wasn’t indifference — it was surrender. Alia had seen it before.
She could see that she had her work cut out for her.
Indi registered at the edge of her consciousness that the Commander was indicating their meeting was over. Well, it hadn't been much of a meeting. She just wanted to be alone. Or did she? In any case, she could feel the anger and rage rising within her. Wanting to break something. Wanting to move her body. But she had to wait. Wait until she was alone again. The lawyer had to leave. Had to leave now. "Thank you, Commander," she managed tightly. Clipped.
