Mission:
Dreamdust
Location: Somewhere
A stretch of silence filled Indi's quarters once Sena and Indi had finally established that they both wanted to get to the real SB369. Granted, they had no way of establishing they were actually the real people, who they were claiming to be, but the time for caution had sailed. Now, they had to get out of there before the owner of this SB caught up with them.
Indi was convinced they didn't have much time. She'd considered her options, but she hadn't quite expected Sena to follow her to her quarters. Thinking hard, looking around, her eye fell on the replicator.
They were still alive, which meant that the food the replicator gave them, had been real. Which meant that whatever this Starbase really was, simulation or something else, the replicator had to have a real power source.
"Help me come up with a way to get a message out to the real Starbase. I'm sure we can use the replicator if we're somewhat creative," Indi nodded from Sena to the replicator. Her days as a covert operator lay far behind her, but she had to be confident she could still get them out of here.
Sena raised her head.
She had been sitting in one of Indi's armchairs, elbows on her knees, her head cradled in her hands. She had known something was wrong, but she had never considered the possibility that everything was wrong.
Looking at Indi, she wondered if this was some sort of test. Not that there was much she could do if it was.
Getting up, she moved over to the replicator.
"The easiest way to get a communicator is to replicate one... " Sena said. "But even if we somehow manage to replicate it, and even if it works, we'll be announcing where we are. Maybe we can use a backdoor method... "
She did not have a lot of engineering training, but she had a lot of experience with replicators. Opening the panel next to the machine, she studied it quietly for a couple of minutes.
"We'll need a hyperspanner." She looked over at Indi.
Indi moved over next to where Sena was standing. "One hyperspanner coming up," she spoke as she tapped in a few commands to the replicator. Moments later, the Engineering tool shimmered into existence. On one hand, she was surprised this replicator allowed the command, on the other hand, if they wanted to create a true Starbase, they had to allow things like this. For once, it came in handy to be in a situation where their captors wanted to be things as realistic as possible.
"Here you go," she spoke, handing over the newly replicated tool. "We should hurry up, I'm not sure how much more time we'll have before they catch up to us."
Sena took the hyperspanner and chewed her lip as she looked at the diagnostic readout.
"Tea, earl gray," she ordered.
A mug of steaming tea appeared on the replicator's tray.
Barely sparing a glance at the mug, Sena muttered to herself, "Okay... let's try this." She pressed the hyperspanner to the dataport.
"Tea, earl gray," she said.
A confinement beam formed on the replicator tray, but nothing resolved within it.
A brief grin crossed Sena’s face. She hadn't expected for this to work. "Now... we need to change the pattern."
"Can you hold this for a second, Admiral?" she turned to Indi.
Once she had both her hands free, she slowly adjusted the buffer manually.
"Now let go."
Indi released the exposed circuit she'd been holding,
In front of them a miniature version of a communicator appeared.
Tilting her head, and despite the seriousness of the situation, Indi couldn't entirely suppress a laugh. "I don't think this one is going to let us get a signal out, but if you can get us one in real size, it might help."
Sena picked up the communicator. "I guess I didn't take the pattern size into account." She put it aside. "Let's try this again."
Once again, she ordered tea, stopping the replicator from generating the requested mug. She adjusted the buffer again.
The confinement beam wavered for a couple of seconds, but once it disappeared, it left in its stead a full-size communicator.
With only a slight hesitation, Indi picked it up. "Let's see what this can do.." she murmured.
Tapping the communicator, it was audible that a channel opened, but only static noise was to be heard. Tapping it again to shut down the sound.
"I can try sending a message, but it's obvious we're not going to know whether or not it went through," Indi sighed.
Tapping again, she spoke slowly and clearly. "This is Rear Admiral Indi Hawk. This is a message for Starfleet and more specifically Starbase 369. I, and others, are being held against our wishes. We're at an unknown location with an unknown number of us. Please follow this message to its origin and render immediate assistance against an unknown enemy."
She let the silence stretch a few moments, and then focused back on Sena. "We should get out of here. We should try to make our way off this Starbase however we can. We can't count on our message having gone through."
Sena was already putting the panel back in place. "The sooner the better, Admiral."
